Political Leaders of India

There are so many political leaders of India who have had an incredibly large impact in progressing and shaping the nation. In fact, it’s thought that more than 200 parties were created after 1947 when India became independent. Three of the most powerful and influential leaders include:

1. Jawaharlal Nehru was a central figure in Indian politics both before and after independence and went on to become the nation’s first ever Prime Minister (and has, to this date, been the longest serving Prime Minister of India). He was admired for is statesmanship, forward thinking attitude, and astute idealism.

2. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a freedom fighter in the independence movement. He was a lawyer by training, and went on to become India’s first ever President. Despite having an apprehension for his principles, he eventually changed his point of view and was mentored by Gandhi.

3. Indira Gandhi made history after being elected as India’s first (and, to this date, only) ever female Prime Minister in 1966. She was known as the ‘Iron Lady of India,’ due to her strong will and formidable reputation all around the world.
